As springtime approaches, excitement is building around the Pleasant Valley softball program. After an impressive 30-10 overall record last year, the Spartans are preparing to take the field once again.
The team enters the season with a renewed sense of purpose and high expectations. Even before official practices began, players were putting in work during offseason open gyms. Pleasant Valley junior Ellie Cook said the sessions highlighted the team’s dedication.“I think there are a whole lot of positives that open gyms are showing for us as a team,” Cook said.
This optimism reflects a strong belief in the group’s effort and unity, and it has allowed the team to focus more closely on the smaller details of the game.
Senior Jayla Bischoff said the attention to fundamentals has been a key difference this season. “One thing that is different about the team this year compared to years prior is everyone’s ability to focus on the little things,” Bischoff said.
Those fundamentals have laid the foundation for a more complete team and helped refine every aspect of its game.
The individual work has also allowed the Spartans to shift their focus toward team chemistry and execution. Bischoff said offseason preparation has made that possible. “By working on individual skills in the offseason, it allows us to start working on team skills earlier in the season,” she said.
With more time to develop communication and cohesion, Pleasant Valley is positioning itself for success. Last season’s run continues to fuel the team’s motivation. Despite being a young team that faced adversity, the Spartans advanced to the state tournament. A quarterfinal loss still resonates with returning players, creating a hunger to prove themselves against Iowa’s top competition.
Pleasant Valley will open the season on April 26 at home against Durant, marking the start of what players hope will be another run at the state title. As opening day approaches, the Spartans aren’t just aiming to match last season’s success— they are determined to surpass it.
