At some point in time, teenagers have suffered from skin break outs. Acne is an inflammation of the sebaceous glands in the skin causing noticeably red pimples to pop out on the skin’s surface. Although acne appears to be a miniscule part of life, it can cause lower self esteem and even depression.

Girls usually start getting acne around the ages of 11 and 13 while boys start getting acne around 12 years of age. Acne starts to disappear when hormones settle down in early to mid-20s. There are many ways to prevent acne from occurring and some include a healthy diet or keeping stress levels low.

There have been many myths about acne that people have come up with. Here are a few examples: greasy foods and candies cause breakouts, it’s okay to pop pimples, pimples happen overnight, and french fries cause acne.

A single pimple normally lasts about 2 to 7 days. In most cases, pimples take almost 2 weeks to clear up completely. Popping pimples is very tempting, but try and avoid doing it because it will only cause irritation and potentially cause the pimple to increase in size. Nazir Kayali is a pediatrician at Quad Cities Pediatrics. Kayali stated that, “Squeezing a pimple often leads to a permanent scar on the face.” Kayali believes it is better to wait and have the pimple run its course.

The best way to avoid acne is to keep your face clean. Washing your face twice a day removes that dirt build up that collects in the pores throughout the day. Use makeup sparingly. During a breakout, avoid wearing foundation, powder, or blush. Makeup products cause acne to form and also worsen the acne already present.

Acne is normal part of life that almost everybody has to deal with. Don’t let it affect your self esteem because chances are, in a couple weeks, it will be cleared up.
