Finals week is usually one of the most stressful times of the year. What students don’t know is they have control of the amount of stress and pressure they experience. Pulling an all nighter isn’t always the best way to study for finals, so here are tips to prepare mentally and physically for that dreaded week.
The first tip and also one of the most important tips is getting a good night’s rest. Try not to procrastinate and create a schedule that helps you divide your time wisely instead of staying up late to study. Students must get 7-8 hours of sleep in order to function and think well on finals day.
Another physical tip would be to eat a healthy breakfast. Breakfast allows for improved concentration and performance in the classroom. According to the American Dietetic Association, children who eat breakfast perform better in the classroom with better concentration, problem-solving skills, and eye-hand coordination.
The last physical tip would be to attend class and seek resources for help. Going in early before finals is a great idea. Students are able to review what they have studied and the best part of it is that you’re reviewing with the teacher who made the final, so chances are that the teacher will only review topics and questions that are relevant and important.
Most students think of their teachers as monsters who want every student to get an F. The best way to get rid of this thought is to think that your teachers want you to do well. Thinking in a positive way allows students to do better.
Before the final starts, focus on your breathing. Allow yourself to relax and inhale deeply through your nose then let it all out through your mouth. Breathing helps relax the body and get rid of all the negativity.
Many students talk to their friends about test questions as soon as they exit the classroom. You should avoid doing this because it usually makes students anxious. Go straight home after the final. Focus on the next final you have and study hard for it.
I hope you find these tips useful. Don’t stress and do the best you can. Good luck!
