Spring break in the Quad Cities

It’s almost spring break, that time of gloriously empty days, swaying palm trees, surf, sand and sun – unless you’re staying home.  Luckily, thanks to the abundance of local events, specials and free activities, you can have just as much fun in the Quad Cities as you would away.

If you’re looking for an opportunity to get outside and enjoy the warm weather, you could catch the tail end of eagle-watching season at the Arsenal Bridge, which sponsors free watching tours every day, or participate in the 5k or half-marathon at the Quad Cities Distance Classic. Or you could hit the trails at Nahant Marsh, which offers gardening, camping, and craft classes almost every day, or hike one of the hundreds of trails at Scott County Park.

If the outdoors are not to your taste, there are plenty of indoor activities available – the Figge Museum offers programs on portraiture, meditation, and cutting-edge arthouse films, for example, and the Putnam Museum houses immersive traveling exhibits on art and professional football. There are also classes and clubs at all Rivershare Public Libraries on everything from slime-making to writers’ workshops to proper aviary care.

Entertainment centers in the Quad Cities are offering specials for spring break, too: Circa 21 is putting on a musical based off “Freaky Friday,” and ComedySportz is offering a number of themed variety shows over the break’s duration. And that’s not to mention the countless number of sales, discounts, and freebies offered at local businesses this week.

Maybe it’s better, however, to get suggestions from PV students themselves. Junior Sarah Thomas said, “I’m going to spend my time watching ‘Star Wars Rebels,’ which I’ve heard is excellent.” Freshman James Breen said, “I’m going beat my friends at Fortnight on my Xbox.” Others are hoping to play video games, too: freshman Logan Croll said, “I’m going to spend the whole of spring break on my Switch.”

Whether you stay home or participate in activities around the Quad Cities area, spring break is sure to be a fun and rejuvenating experience.
