Back to school is a period of time many find enjoyable– the chance of a fresh start and the opportunity to meet different people and create new memories. However, while it may be a time filled with excitement, it also brings in a new wave of anxiety for some. Students aren’t sure what to expect this upcoming school year, from freshmen just now entering the world of responsibility to seniors who will soon be entering the world of adulthood. Luckily, there are past students who have been in the exact positions you may be in and are willing to share advice on how to survive this upcoming school year.
Freshmen : High school isn’t anything like High School Musical, unfortunately. Instead you get an intimidating workload, crowded hallways, and a whole lot of hormones. But fear not! While it might seem terrifying at first that you’re in this vast new world, it gets easier. The best advice to give to current freshmen is to stay focused on yourself! The amount of homework you get may seem hefty at first, but it’s important to pace yourself. Don’t leave everything for the last minute and remember to use your planner because no matter how much you try to convince yourself that your brain is enough, you will forget about that one English assignment. While freshmen are no longer required to stay during 8th period on Fridays, don’t be afraid to still go in and ask your teachers for help–they’re there to help you out. Freshmen year will be overwhelming – but remember – it only gets better from here.
Sophomores : Congratulations on surviving your first year of highschool! You still have some time ahead of you, but you’re getting there. Sophomore year is a nice in-between as there isn’t much to worry about. However, it’s important to remember that this is one of the foundation years for your GPA. Stay focused on your classes and don’t be afraid to ask questions. During this time, you might also start prepping for the ACT or SAT, but take it easy! This is your year to explore different classes or subjects to help discover what you’ll want to do in your future, so don’t be afraid to try new things.
Juniors : Arguably one of, if not the most stressful year of highschool. ACT/SATs, college, and keeping up with your grades all at the same time can be tough, but you can do it. Vinita Medithi, a previous PV student and current senior states, “Some of you may feel behind because you don’t know which colleges you’re applying to, don’t know what you want as a major;but as scary as that may feel, you’re not alone and it’s never too late to focus in on your future and develop a plan. If you start planning as a junior, you’re still doing well in the race towards college! Spend time with yourself. No one can cultivate your interests and passions for you– No one can set career/academic goals to encourage you the way you can.” It’s important to keep up with your classes, as this is another one of those foundation years for your GPA meaning after this year, your GPA is mostly set. Good luck to you juniors, remember that it’s okay to take a break every once in a while–don’t burn yourself out!
Seniors : Although this may be your last year, the journey isn’t quite over yet so don’t relax too much! Remember to stay on top of your classes but to also focus on your college deadlines. Once you miss them, you can’t go back. Ellie Zupancic, a former PV student and current sophomore at University of Iowa states, “No matter where you’re going to end up post-high school—college, working, learning a trade, traveling—make sure you’re also paying attention to your mental wellbeing.” Adult life can be intimidating but remember you have various resources to utilize if you have questions– don’t be afraid to talk to your counselors or teachers about college. It’s okay if you aren’t sure about what your future plans are, many people are in the same position as you and while it may be your senior year, you still have some time until you need to make the final decision. While this is a time to be focused on your future, remember to let yourself live in the moment. Congratulations on making it this far!
