It has been a great start for Pleasant Valley High School athletics. Four of the six fall sports won the Mississippi Athletic Conference (MAC) title, making a statement in the conference early in the year.
Girls and boys cross country, volleyball, and boys golf all claimed the top spot in the conference. This is exactly what Pleasant Valley wants, claiming the famous ‘Committed to Excellence’ motto.
Dr. Spelhaug, the school’s superintendent, said, “It makes me very proud to see our sports off to a great start. Our goal is to have the finest academic and extracurricular programs in the state, not in some things, but in everything and not for some students but for every student. These accomplishments serve as an indication of how the district is doing in an aspect of that vision.”
Boys golf has already had their state golf meet, which took place on Oct. 6. The spartans got second place, which is the best finish in Pleasant Valley history.
Jack Roemer, a sophomore varsity golfer who finished sixth at state, explained, “We’re all really happy with the win at MAC and the strong finish at state. We are very happy with how we played all season and the outcome of it all.”
The Cross Country teams have always been dominant for Pleasant Valley and this year was no different for the spartans. Both teams had many runners in the top ten at the MAC meet. PV runner’s Max Murphy and Mallory Lafever both won the individual MAC title by getting first place.
“This year was really special to be able to win a second team MAC championship. It’s always amazing to celebrate a victory with some of my best friends and girls I’ve been running with for six years now. Winning the individual title was an added bonus,” Lafever stated.
The volleyball team sealed their MAC title with a win over Burlington on Oct. 15, which ended their regular season games. This was the second straight year volleyball has won the conference title, but senior Adrea Arthofer explained, “Winning MAC is always a great accomplishment, but our main goal is making it to state.”
The fall sports have started the school year right, and hopefully Pleasant Valley winter sports can follow in their footsteps.
