Black Friday comes once a year during the holiday season, giving people the opportunity to buy gifts at a great cost. However, the term Black Friday has become slightly ironic since most stores offer the doorbuster deals on the night of Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving is a holiday in which many people gather with their families to give thanks for the season. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving in which many people do not have work or school, allowing lots of time for shopping.
Throughout the past few years, Black Friday deals have started on Thanksgiving Day rather than Black Friday. For some, Thanksgiving traditions have been cut short due to Black Friday Deals starting earlier. Deals like these simply can’t be beat and when the opportunity arises, one must not pass it up. Some say these early deals have ruined the idea of Black Friday, while others believe it allows them more time to shop for Christmas gifts.
Junior Olivia Marchiori enjoys shopping on the night of Thanksgiving after her family gathering comes to a close. She claimed, “everything is more in stock on Thanksgiving. By Friday, most of the items are gone.”
Black Friday deals have not only imposed on Thanksgiving Day, but they have also tend to overstay their visit. Many stores have their deals last from Thanksgiving afternoon until Cyber Monday, another holiday in which people use to find gifts for a bargain.
The transition to earlier start times was slow at first, before jumping to Thanksgiving evening. Store owners wanted to give their customers more time to shop at low prices, therefore they started opening their stores earlier in the morning around four. This attracted anxious customers to stand and even lay outside the store until doors opened. This is only one of many factors that lead to stores opening on Thanksgiving.
Not all stores open their doors on Thanksgiving. For example, Homegoods, Marshalls and Costco have agreed to keep their doors closed until Black Friday. Many stores remain closed on Thanksgiving in order to allow customers to stay at home and enjoy the holiday.
