The majority of students at Pleasant Valley all use and have Apple product phones and computers. Not a lot of students use many Androids/Samsung products anymore, but for some, it might change due to the possibility of upcoming tariffs on Apple products.
Apples stock has fallen 25% since reaching its peak of $233.47 in the beginning of October, and Apple’s stocks also fell 1.5% in after-hours trading. This is all due to the trade war that the United States and China are in. Vice President Mike Pence stated, “The United States will not change course until China changes its ways.” In order to end this trade war President Trump is meeting with Chinese Leader Xi Jinping in Buenos Aires Argentina, on the sidelines of a G20 summit.
If this trade war does not end, Trump has some plans of attack to better the trade war. One of Trump’s plan is to raise tariffs on more than $200 billion of Chinese goods in January. Chinese leader Xi Jinping stated that he would avert that plan which will then lead Trump to add an additional $267 billion on. Once Trump adds the additional $267 billion on, Trump also plans on adding another 10% tariff on a good that will most likely be Apple Products. Karleigh Nading, current junior, said “I honestly think it’s smart for Trump to put the tariff on Apple products on behalf of the trade war in order to try to come to a conclusion.”
“Maybe. Maybe. Depends on what the rate is. I mean, I can make it 10% and people could stand that very easily,” Trump stated. Trump decided to put the tariff on Apple products because they are one of the most popular goods and many consumers own Apple Products. Many people are already complaining about this tariff as well as many American businesses who have to deal with paying for the import duties.
“I don’t think it will be a major difference on the price of Apple products, nor do I think it will affect the amount of people buying these products,” stated Nading. Not only are the Apple products price going to rise, so is some of Walmarts goods, who is the country’s biggest retailer. Walmart has warned that everyday goods such as shampoo, detergents, and most paper goods will all rise in price.
Ellie Beeler, current senior, said, “I think this trade war needs to come to an end and there needs to be a truce, so it stops affecting the price of goods that consumers need.” Trump believes that they could come to a truce, “It could happen. They have to treat us fairly,” Trump stated. Many people are awaiting for the outcome of the meeting and hopefully a truce between the United States and China.
