Oct. 9 featured the penultimate 2016 presidential debate. Besides the usual back-and-forth argumentation, this debate was different for a few reasons: questions were asked by the audience, and some think Trump may have attempted to pull his campaign back together.
Recent polls still have Clinton winning the election by a 2-5 point spread, yet some on social media thought that though Trump did not win in a landslide; he performed a lot better this time around. Some thought that he showed resilience in his ability to bounce back from the last debate.
The questions asked by the audience were quality and heavy questions, but both of the candidates danced around the questions and sometimes did not answer them at all. One of the final questions, “name one positive thing you respect in one another,” found a foothold in social media with tweeters and bloggers praising the asker for his ability to make the candidates swallow their pride. Moderator-wise, the debate was overseen by Anderson Cooper of CNN and Martha Raddatz of ABC. Some were skeptical after the debate of the quality of moderation and the ability of moderators to remain unbiased. The Republican social media felt this debate was poorly moderated with Raddatz even trying to debate the candidates herself. The Democratic social media felt this debate, like the last few, had their candidate running the show with their opponent floundering in comedy.

I think that the debates haven’t really been changing people’s minds. Because we have such polarized candidates, it isn’t likely that many people would switch sides between the two main candidates after the debates.
