This past Saturday, Oct. 22, the JV girls’ swim team concluded their season at the MAC meet in Muscatine. The girls placed second behind Bettendorf, which in turn, broke their extensive winning streak. Kate Mickle, a junior on the team, said it was disappointing, but their placement was also impressive considering how few they had on the team this year. “For only having 14 girls on our MAC team, second place is really good,” Mickle stated. “But it was really disappointing that we lost by so much after winning the last several years.” Mallory Obenauf, a senior captain on the team, said, “even though we didn’t win, everyone gave 110 percent effort and that’s something to be proud of.”
Although the result of the meet might have been disappointing, Obenauf stated, “lots of time drops were achieved and individual goals met.” There were indeed many time drops and in turn many podium finishes, with the girls making the podium in 10 of the 12 events. The one thing Obenauf said could’ve been improved however, were the relays; pointing more specifically to the relay exchanges.
With another season in the books, the girls are already planning for next season. Obenauf stated she hopes the JV girls will get the opportunity to practice with the Varsity team again next season, saying she believed, “the JV team was pushed a lot harder in practices this year, which really helped them grow as swimmers.” Mickle said the girls are already, “ready to come back next year and be a better team.”
