Spartan athletes are getting their dose of out-of-season training through the Davenport Parks and Rec Indoor Soccer League, creating a spur of excitement and fun for players and fans.
Pleasant Valley students have created two indoor soccer teams: ‘McCausland’ and ‘Arnold’s Meat Market’. Both teams have gained publicity throughout the school due to their exciting soccer matches filled with laughter and the controversy surrounding the teams.
McCausland is made up of many players from the varsity soccer team. Jimmy Feeney is the head coach of the team which boasts a 4-0 record in the HS Boys Top league. In their first four games, they have outscored their opponents 27-9. Senior Spencer Brecht is a player for McCausland and enjoys competing with his friends. “I think the River’s Edge soccer league provides players with an excellent opportunity to get off-season touches on the ball while also having a fun time,” emphasized Brecht.
On the other hand, Arnold’s Meat Market consists of many players from the varsity football team. They bring fun and physicality to the indoor soccer league. Head Coach Brandon Young is proud of what his team has accomplished this season. “We have some guys with a lot of experience, and some with no experience. But regardless, we have come together for a common goal: winning the league,” stated Young. His team holds a 5-0 record in the HS Boys Lower league and have outscored their opponents 34-15.
The indoor soccer teams from PV have been known for their aggressive playing style in the league. Last year’s team, “The Dope Boyz,” had the police called on them after an altercation between the two teams, leading to parents from the opposing team coming onto the field and threatening PV’s team. The event almost led to the team being kicked out of the league, but players assure that the league is just for fun and is not meant for any sort of unsportsmanlike acts.
The indoor soccer league creates a fun environment, especially for fans of the two teams. Junior Courtney Mohr frequently attends McCausland’s games. “It’s fun to go with friends and watch an aggressive game where the team really gets into it,” stated Mohr.
The indoor soccer league season ends in mid-January and provides Spartan athletes with a great off-season training while providing entertainment for spectators.
