Although the election had a surprising end in November, the storm has not died down yet. Green Party candidate Jill Stein has called for a recount in three powerhouse states: Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.
There is a long process for these recounts to even happen. The Stein campaign had to raise enough money to pay for the staff that is doing the recount, which will cost $9.5 million according to the New York Times. The recount also has to be approved by the state since it will cost taxpayers money.
This push for a recount is surprising, especially since the margin is substantial in these recount states. Donald Trump is ahead by 22,177 votes in Wisconsin; 70,638 in Pennsylvania; and 10,704 in Michigan. Marc Elias, a campaign lawyer for Hillary Clinton, said these gaps would exceed “the largest margin ever overcome in a recount.”
State courts are also having trouble allowing these recounts to happen without any evidence of tampering with the voting machines.
Although it seems far-fetched to believe these recounts could change the outcome of the totals, it is very unlikely it will be enough to remove Trump, especially since the recounts must be done before Dec. 19, the day the Electoral College meets. The benefit of these recounts may show disparities that could be contested in court.
Trump is not going to allow this recount to happen easily. A federal judge in Michigan has ordered the recount to stop. Mark Goldsmith, the US district judge, stated, “A recount as an audit of the election has never been endorsed by any court.”
Jill Stein finds this disheartening, but said, “It’s not over yet.”
