7.The Queen’s Gambit
Beth Harmon is an orphan after losing her mother to a car accident. As a curious girl, Harmon goes to the basement of her orphanage and discovers the game of chess. Quick to learn, she becomes better than all the members of the boy’s high school team and rises as a chess prodigy. When Beth is adopted, she begins to compete in chess events, and by age 16, finds herself competing in the US Open. Starting at a young age, Beth faced addiction and struggles throughout the series.
6.The Last Dance
After winning five NBA championships, Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls look for their sixth championship and second three-peat. This series lets viewers in on the preparation as the Bulls aim for the title in the 1997-1998 NBA season. It also features players, mostly Jordan, before, during and after the season. Focusing on Jordan, viewers better understand his life and the challenges presented in his career.
5.Dahmer
Jeffrey Dahmer reportedly drugged, sexually assaulted and killed 17 boys and young men from 1978 to 1991. The Netflix series highlights aspects of his life. It shows the hard times he faced growing up while his parents fought and why he grew into a killer. The series quickly climbed its way to popularity on Netflix, and the life of a killer from 30 years ago has become a fascinating story.
4.Outer Banks
16-year-old John B is left abandoned after his father was presumed dead at sea for an unknown reason. When a hurricane wrecks the Outer Banks, John B and his friends take the opportunity to rummage through items from sunken ships. In one of the ships, John B finds his dad’s old compass, and questions arise. The Outer Banks is rumored to have had a ship carrying gold crash long ago, and all the gold is somewhere on the island. John B and his friends find a note left for him from his father in the compass and begin their treasure hunt.
3.Stranger Things
Setting place in Hawkins, Indiana in the ‘80s, Stranger Things became a fan favorite. The sci-fi series begins in Mike Wheeler’s basement, with his friends: Lucas, Will and Dustin. The young teens are finishing up Dungeons and Dragons when Mike’s mom tells the boys to head home. As Will rides home that night, he goes missing on his bike, and the series takes off. Taken to the ‘Upside Down’, Will is trapped in Hawkins, but in another dimension. From there, strange activity begins in Hawkins for years to come.
Simultaneously, Eleven, a young girl played by Millie Bobby Brown, escapes from Hawkins’ lab. She runs off until she is found by Mike, Lucas and Dustin in the woods. Eleven is also conveniently equipped with superpowers and helps find Will in the ‘Upside Down.’ The young teens form a strong bond and save the two ‘worlds’ from colliding, time after time.
2.Ozark
Set in Osage Beach, Missouri, Marty Byrde, portrayed by Jason Bateman, and his family are suddenly forced to move from Chicago to the Lake of the Ozarks in a ‘life or death situation.’ Marty works as a money launderer for the Navarro Cartel, and all his partners, but himself, stole from the Cartel. In a plea, he convinces his boss to let him launder in the Ozarks and move his family there. The four-season series is a constant battle for Marty, who has to make ends meet and take gamble after gamble to stay alive.
1.Breaking Bad
Arguably the best plot and TV show of all time, Breaking Bad made its debut on Netflix. Walter White, portrayed by Brian Cranston, is an over-qualified high school chemistry teacher in Albuquerque, New Mexico. When Walter is diagnosed with lung cancer at age 50, he knows his time left is short. Desperately, he teams up with a former student, Jesse Pinkman, and starts cooking methamphetamine to leave his family with money when he is gone. The seven-season series highlights two years of Walter cooking meth and participating in other violent and illegal activities.
