Miss Universe 2017 had 5.21 million viewers watching on Sunday, Jan. 29. This year, it was hosted again by Steve Harvey, comedian and game show host. This year went a lot smoother for Harvey as compared to last year when he read the wrong name as the winner. Instead of declaring Miss Philippines as the 2016’s Miss Universe, he accidentally announced Miss Colombia as the winner. This caused an uproar for the show. Since then, Harvey has apologized many times for his mistake. “Did I make a mistake? Yes I did, wholeheartedly,” said Harvey. Gracie Wilson, senior, said, “I feel incredibly sorry for the girl who had her crown taken away last year because Steve Harvey messed up.”
With all of the attention Miss Universe received last year from Harvey’s mistake, it would make sense for their ratings to go up the following year. Harvey, after his mistake, even said, “I don’t feel sorry for the pageant. The pageant will now be bigger than it’s ever been.” However, this did not happen for the show. In fact, its ratings dropped a little. This was mainly due to the schedule change from last year. This year it was held in January, compared to last year’s December show. This, in turn, made the show compete with the SAG Awards, making the ratings lower.
Harvey still managed to make it an entertaining show. Miss France took the crown for the 2017 Miss Universe. Miss Haiti took second place, leaving third place to Miss Colombia.
