The third annual Belmont Mile is set to take place on Pleasant Valley’s newly resurfaced 400 meter track on June 1, with proceeds contributing both the PV Cross Country team and underprivileged children with an interest in the sport.
The previous track was under construction for the entirety of the 2023 summer, prompting the temporary relocation of the Belmont Mile to Augustana’s race track.
PV teacher Nicholas Sacco founded the event three years ago with the idea of bringing together athletes from across the midwest to compete and expand their love of running. Attracting runners from Chicago to Des Moines, ranging from junior high students to professionals, the race’s popularity is ever increasing.
Funds raised from the event will in part contribute to PV’s boy’s and girl’s cross country teams. Without the help of the Belmont Mile, trips such as NXR (Nike Cross Country Regionals) would not be possible.
Senior cross country team captain Max Sorgenfrey is fortunate for the opportunities the Belmont Mile provides. “The money from the Belmont Mile brings the overall cost of trips like Nike Cross Country Regionals down dramatically. The proceeds also allow for postseason experiences that help us grow as runners and as teammates,” he shared.
Another portion of the proceeds go towards Mike Jay’s Track Guy Foundation. This nonprofit organization is partnered with the Belmont Mile and aims towards providing the tools necessary to spark kids’ interest in running. Additionally, this foundation provides scholarships and the opportunity for kids to attend a running summer camp.
For many the Belmont Mile offers a way to stay involved in running beyond high school. Nels looks forward to staying connected to the running community through events like the Belmont Mile.
“The Belmont Mile gives high school athletes one more chance to pop a great time. The normal competitive season ends during the last few weeks of May, so the timing of this meet is perfect. It also brings together every casual runner in the QC and gives them a chance to compete all while raising donations for the community,” he said
Nels has been active in advertising the event with the ultimate goal of bringing a community of runners closer together. “The Belmont Mile is all about building the community, having fun and creating lasting relationships. It is a really special experience that made me feel like I was at the forefront helping the community. It will always hold a special place in my heart,” he said
With continuously growing traction, the Belmont Mile is projected to bring in more runners and donations than ever before, allowing for increased participation and interest in both track and cross country.
