As an under-appreciated bird, lots of time pigeons are assumed to be all the same. However there is a wide variety of species all over the world all with different features. Even though pigeons are carriers for many diseases and can cause more issues, they also add an element of nature to big cities and are a vital part of the culture there.
1. Pink necked green pigeon
Commonly found in South East Asia, this species is full of color. With green wings and a pink and orange chest, these birds would be hard to miss in nature. They have a steady population which puts them at the top of this list.
2. Victoria Crowned Pigeon
Located in Papua New Guinea these are a very rare species of pigeon. With feathers on the top of their head that resemble them of a peacock these birds are very different from your domestic pigeon. With vibrant blue feathers these birds got their name to commemorate the British monarch, Queen Victoria.
3. Luzon Bleeding Heart
Found in the forests of the Philippine islands, these pigeons can cause concern when first seen. With a large red circle in the middle of the chest giving the appearance that they are wounded, thus the origin of their name. To go with their appearance there is a myth connecting to this bird’s red chest that entails a male pigeon puffing out their “bleeding heart” in order to get the attention of the female birds.
4. Pied Imperial Pigeons
With the preference of coastal locations, this species lives around Thailand. Primarily all white in color, the pigeons are able to blend in well. Along with that they are known for being some of the most powerful flyers in the world. The muscles they use for flight are relatively larger than those of other birds.
5. Wood Pigeon
Found primarily wherever there are trees these birds can be found in the UK as well as other locations. With a rich diet of cabbage and sprouts these birds are able to survive for a long time throughout the cold months. This species is one of the most common ones and has a very steady population.
6. Domesticated Pigeons
As your most common form of pigeon, most people have had an interaction with this bird before. Whether walking around in big cities like Chicago or New York City, these birds are hard to miss. Due to their commonness and the ability they have to carry diseases, these birds rank at the bottom of this list.
