Post high school plans for most students today involve secondary education, like college. A place where new experiences and relationships are guaranteed, but a career is not.
Many of the most popular college majors for students today are becoming so oversaturaturated that job availability out of college is not very high. Students decide on their studies with the goal of having an assured career when they graduate, but that is not always the case.
Although jobs are not all about the money, it is a huge factor when considering what you want to be, along with job satisfaction and standard of living. With this being said, the chosen majors of college students in the US are not providing some of these things.
Some college majors seem appealing to students just based on the fact that they are popular, thus making them seem like they have high demand in the workplace. Some of these majors include, exercise science, graphic design, photography/art, radio/television/film production, and education.
Exercise Science:
Since the ever growing fitness fad in our country, many students dive into exercise science. The issue with this college major is that, while exercise is growing, so are the alternative ways of losing weight. It is smarter to broaden your options and pick a different health field major, which are in higher demand and have a higher starting salary.
Graphic Design:
Graphic design has become a very popular major over the years, because of the need for print designs. But, because of the internet, many of the designs needed are for web sites, advertising, and social media. A better idea would be to major in something like web design or multimedia advertising.
Radio, Television, and Film Production:
Being a big time hollywood producer sounds like fun, but more times than not, that dream is out of reach for a lot of people with this degree. The demand is low for these jobs and Kiplinger’s Today reported that, “Only 36% of production majors report leaving a positive impact on the world.”
Photography and Art:
While the work can be rewarding, and is often done out of love for art, this major is growing while demand is not. Also, you cannot rely on a steady paycheck, because most artists work freelance. An alternative career could be visual communications or the broad world of marketing.
Education:
It is very recognized in our country that teachers are extremely under valued. Influencing future generations is an upside to this career, but the stress and work this job takes on can sometimes be overbearing. Instead, maybe look at being a school administrator. Their pay is substantially higher and the reward of shaping children’s futures is still available.
