With the rise in skin cancer, tanning has become a very common topic these days. Whether it’s from the pure sunshine outdoors or “fake baking” with tanning beds, tanning poses an increasing risk for cancer.
Back in the day, people wanted to be pale because it showed their wealth and that they were not a slave working outside, but now, darker skin is preferred for beauty. But why is this?
Sammie Mcgee, senior, said, “I tan because I’m more insecure when I’m pale, and I know I’m in a controlled environment when I’m in a tanning bed so I don’t have to worry about getting burnt. I probably tan about 2 times a week.”
Bed tanning is becoming more popular with teenagers, especially girls. Most say tanning lifts their self esteem and makes them feel more confident in themselves. Although nearly all are well aware of the risks involved with tanning, some simply can’t give it up. The younger one is exposed to tanning and the more frequent one bed tans, the risk of getting melanoma increases. Using tanning beds before the age of 35 increases the rate of getting melanoma by 59%.
With tanning, skin cancer, premature aging, and eye damage are all up for much concern. However, there are preventative methods to decrease these consequences.
Maddie Huffman, senior, said, “I tan because it lifts my mood and I like being tan. I tan twice or three times a week but protect my skin with lotion and use FDA-recommended beds every time.”
The biggest question to ask teens who frequently can’t get enough of the UV rays is if they would rather look good now or later. With tanning causing premature aging, most aren’t concerned or worried about their appearance down the road because they would rather be tan now.
There are two very different ends with opinions facing this controversy. Despite the major risks opposed with UV rays, some believe tanning isn’t all that bad.
Carly Hancock, soon to be store manager at Sun Tan City, said, “I don’t think tanning in moderation is bad. When it becomes an addiction where people are tanning every single day, I think it is an issue. We promote tanning in moderation! I’ve learned, honestly, the most important thing is eyewear.”
