The TV series “Invincible” first premiered on streaming services in 2021, adapting the comic book series created by Robert Kirkman and Cory Walker.
Both the comic and animated series follow Mark Grayson, a teenager who inherits superpowers from his Viltrumite dad, Omini-Man. However, things quickly change when Omni-Man is revealed to be loyal to the Viltrum Empire rather than Earth, leaving Mark as one of the planet’s primary protectors.
After receiving multiple awards and attracting millions of views for its animation and faithful adaptation of the source material, the release of “Invincible” Season 4 on March 18, 2026, was highly anticipated.
That anticipation, however, may have worked against the series. Many fans and critics criticized the season’s animation quality, comparing some scenes to “sliding PNGs” because of the limited movement and lack of detail.
The season reportedly had a budget of $2.5 million per episode, making the criticism even more noticeable to viewers. Despite the large budget, some fans argued that the action scenes lacked fluid animation, detailed shading and visual impact.
There have also been online rumors that the show relies on a small animation staff while spending a significant portion of its budget on celebrity voice actors, though those claims have not been officially confirmed.
Despite the criticism, many viewers continue to praise the series for its storytelling and commitment to adapting the comics closely. Fans also point to the show’s willingness to portray violence without heavy censorship as one of its defining strengths.
Five years ago, “Invincible” was widely considered one of the strongest superhero stories of the decade. While the fourth season has drawn criticism for inconsistent animation quality, the series still remains one of the most popular animated superhero shows of the 2020s and continues to attract fans of action and comic-book storytelling.
