Science-fiction films like Project Hail Mary have captivated audiences in the 2020s with their detailed storytelling and visually striking depictions of science and space exploration. For many students, these films offer more than entertainment—they create a connection between classroom learning and popular media.
PV senior Asmita Bag gave insight as to what made her visit the theaters.
“Obviously there are minor mistakes but overall the scientific part of the movie was just vague enough to not question it,” Bag said. “I personally watched it because of the book, which was very well written, not necessarily because it was sci-fi.”
Although Bag plans to pursue a STEM-related major, she said the film’s literary roots and storytelling were the main reasons she was interested in seeing it.
Other students, however, are especially drawn to the scientific concepts portrayed in films like “Interstellar” and “The Martian.”
“I am someone who is definitely a nerd and enjoys learning about science in my classes at school, so when I see them in the media that I watch it makes me really excited,” senior Vella Batdorf said.
For students interested in STEM, the prominence of scientific theories and ideas on screen can make learning feel engaging and relevant. Films that incorporate real scientific concepts often inspire curiosity while still remaining accessible to general audiences.
Batdorf said she appreciates when filmmakers simplify difficult concepts without losing their scientific foundation.
“I especially love when they explain a very complicated scientific idea or scientific theory and they can kind of break it down to a ‘movie level,’” said Batdorf. “I think it’s just really entertaining to see scientific elements when they are accurately added.”
Since science-fiction films attract audiences of different ages and educational backgrounds, filmmakers must balance scientific accuracy with storytelling and visual appeal. While not every viewer may understand every concept, effective explanations can make the material enjoyable and understandable for a wider audience.
For some students, the ambitious scientific missions portrayed in these films can also be inspiring. As characters overcome impossible odds through intelligence, experimentation and perseverance, viewers are encouraged to think more deeply about science and innovation.
Ultimately, movies like Project Hail Mary demonstrate how science fiction can both entertain and fuel curiosity. By blending compelling narratives with scientific ideas, these films give students a form of entertainment that complements their interest in learning and discovery.
