Every year, the Met Gala draws an immense number of designers, influencers and celebrities from around the country to exhibit extravagant outfits and display wealth. However, as conflict involving the United States and Iran continues, many view these displays as increasingly tone-deaf.
The Met Gala has long served as a symbol of wealth and luxury among the elite, highlighting the divide between the upper class and the general population each year. As everyday people watch celebrities dressed in million-dollar outfits, the disparity between the two lifestyles becomes difficult to ignore.
Many Americans are currently struggling with rising costs tied to inflation and global instability. Gas prices and mortgage rates continue to rise, while grocery costs remain difficult for many families to manage. Despite these hardships, celebrities still spend lavishly on appearances at events like the Met Gala.
Many people believe that those with immense wealth should use their money to support humanitarian efforts and community-focused initiatives rather than extravagant events. However, critics argue that advocacy from high society often feels limited or performative. “I think that celebrities are extremely out of touch with the real world and the problems that people face,” shared junior Kalie Tessen.
Senior Kate Fitzpatrick shared her thoughts on how these displays are received. “Events like the Met Gala place tension between the wealthy and the masses. These events showcase how disconnected the two are, with the wealthy disregarding the common people, and global conflicts in the world,” Fitzpatrick said.
Tessen pointed out how the event can feel dystopian when viewed alongside ongoing global crises. “Watching them spend millions while people are dying feels as if it’s out of a novel,” she said.
Overall, the Met Gala serves as a clear example of the growing divide between wealthy elites and the general public. As criticism surrounding excessive displays of wealth increases during periods of war and economic instability, many feel celebrities continue living unaffected by the struggles impacting ordinary people around the world.
