All state auditions are soon approaching and everyone is talking about it. However, students that audition for All State are generally 10th-12th grade, since PV’s choral music program is very competitive. Freshman have the unique opportunity of auditioning for the Opus Honor Choir.
Thousands of students audition for the Iowa Opus Honor Choir. The honor choir is for grades 5-9 and the choir is very selective. The audition process requires students to sing My Country ‘Tis of Thee, an excerpt from a selected song and a scale for their voice part. All the recordings are sent to ICDA and member choir teachers select students based on the recording.
Mrs. Lyon said, “We had a lot of students make it this year, 9th grade is the hardest year since they only accept 45 students per voice part.” This year, Pleasant Valley was fortunate to have 44 students accepted and 2 alternates to the honor choir. Most of the numbers were from elementary schools and middle schools but from the high school, 9 students were accepted and 2 alternates.
As we have seen by their accomplishments thus far, these students have high accomplishments for All State and other honor choirs in the following years.
