Snowden Review

The man, the myth, the legend–Edward Snowden is the star of the Sept. 16th movie, “Snowden.” The movie details the events surrounding the life of Snowden, who has done much in his 33 years (as of 2016). Movie-maker, Oliver Stone, created a movie which made moviegoers question their stances on the 2013 NSA spying leaks. Joseph Gordon-Levitt stars as Snowden with co-star, Shailene Woodley, as Lindsay Mills, Snowden’s girlfriend. Nick Cage plays a role in the movie too. The movie is as accurate as possible with Snowden himself saying, it is a “pretty accurate portrayal,” from Detroit Free Press. Snowden appears in the end of the movie, which Stone claims, “we did nine takes from several different angles, we got there eventually but it was a painful day,” Stone commented in USA Today’s article.

The screenplay is well done, along with fantastic camera work. The medical troubles of Snowden, surrounding his epilepsy and breaking both his legs in a Special Forces training incident, are filmed spectacularly. All around this movie deserves to be watched, if not for the aspects that make it a cinematic experience, but for the premise and the pure knowledge and info base of the movie.

“Snowden” is definitely recommended for those who are savvy with tech and those who use social media and cellphones on a regular basis, to fully understand the gravitas of the internet and their virtual footprint.
