Everyone loves a close match.
That was exactly the case this past weekend for the PV boys golf team. After multiple wins the boys came into the Mississippi Athletic Conference with their heads high, and lots of confidence. But that doesn’t mean its a bad idea to study your opponents.
After winning nearly all of their meets this season the boys felt prepared for a defining meet. But Friday did not go according to plan. Bettendorf had some great boys, with some very low, and impressive scores. Fortanlety the Spartans did not give up without a fight. Lucas Wendell placed second overall, and Jack Dumas came right behind him snatching third place.
Lucas Wendell commented, “We stayed positive even though we were down knowing that a few of the guys that struggled were going to be able to turn it around day 2.” Through hard work and determination, the Spartans came back and stole the win from Bettendorf. That’s always a reason to celebrate.
The scores eventually ended up to be very close; PV 630, and Bettendorf 632. After those two very close scores, there was a big gap. Davenport Central had 697, followed by Muscatine and North Scott.
Bettendorf acquired a new golfer when he moved to the QC. Matthew Garside is Bettendorf top golfer, but him and his team were no match for Lucas and Jack, and the rest of the team.
The boys have Districts and state coming up and they are hopeful to make sure Bettendorf stays behind them, and that they can focus on winning districts, and eventually state. Districts take place in Muscatine and the Spartans are determined to win that meet for the second year in a row, just like MAC.
