Chapter 48: Mr. Zahn

Chapter+48%3A+Mr.+Zahn

Mr. Zahn started teaching in 2002 and teaches Government and Sociology, but his true passion is Sociology, and he has loved it ever since he began teaching at Pleasant Valley. When asked about what he liked so much about it, Zahn said, “The subject is fascinating to me. I chose this subject because I want to encourage people to be fascinated about it as well. I don’t regret choosing this subject at all. I wouldn’t want to do anything else with my life.” He believes that the most important part of teaching is to make sure students can apply what he teaches to everyday life. This helps his students learn hands-on and be able to apply these techniques throughout life.

He loves changing up the set-up of his desks in his room because with the classes he teaches, it is important that there are new situations for activities involving peer work. When looking for good students it is important for Zahn that the student is engaged, curious, and eager to learn more about the subject. In Sociology, he does his homework assignments and quizzes online with a specific time limit. Zahn chose this style of teaching because he feels it works best for a Sociology class. Zahn said, “I chose this style of teaching to prepare my students for college since this is a college class I want them to get the true experience.”

Zahn went to Coe college and majored in Sociology and Psychology. He always planned on teaching or doing some type of research when out of college. Zahn married his wife in 2014 and has three beautiful daughters. In Zahn’s free time, he also teaches 8th grade football at Pleasant Valley Junior High.

Teaching the subject he majored in, loves, and is passionate about, makes everyday of work for him more enjoyable. Mr. Zahn is an amazing teacher who takes pride in what he’s teaching. He makes sure the students thoroughly understand the curriculum and provides multiple teaching styles such as hands-on, powerpoints, slideshows, and various class activities. He’s committed to giving each and every student the best learning enviroment.
