Democrats have been making calls for the impeachment of President Donald Trump. While looking for evidence to throw the president out of the office, Business Insider reported that impeaching Trump would hurt them in the next election. The Democrats should drop their mission to impeach Trump and focus instead on encouraging new bills and voter turn-out in the next election.
Many presidential candidates have expressed their support for impeachment, such as Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Julian Castro, and Beto O’Rourke. Tom Steyer, another candidate, even ran commercials in 2018 calling for his impeachment.
As Trump has continuously caused controversy in The United States, he has crossed lines that some Democrats cannot support. Alexandria Oscio-Cortez has been very vocal when voicing her support for impeachment, recently tweeting, “The President is corrupt and must be impeached.”
This tweet originally rooted from investigations alleging that the President was profiting from government use of his properties, even insinuating that the G7 summit would be held at the Trump National Doral Miami Golf Resort. While profiting from government use of a business is illegal without congressional approval, Trump has not technically violated this law yet.
While these actions are wrong, the impeachment process would hurt the country more. This makes the country more vulnerable in security. While many disagree with Trump’s ideologies, those of Mike Pence are even more radical.
As the Constitution of the United States clearly states the separation between church and state. Pence has clearly stated he is, “a Christian, a conservative, and a Republican, in that order.” Pence has also been quite clear that he will not meet with a woman, unless his wife is there. This is a violation of national security and promotes the idea that women do not belong in high political stances.
Pence becoming president would be extremely hurtful to the rights of women. Pence has even suggested that women should not be in the military because they cannot control themselves sexually. Senior Abbey Wehrheim stated, “I feel that we need leaders that represent everyone’s rights, and I cannot support a politician who puts his personal and religious beliefs above constitutional law.”
As many are eager to get Trump out of Washington D.C, the best way to do this is through voting him out in November of 2020. Everyone’s voice truly matters, especially in this election.
