Fall sports are in full swing for many Spartans, all of which have started out strong. Football, cross country, volleyball, boys golf, and girls swimming are now approaching mid-season with great leadership from team captains and coaches.
The football team began the season with some tough losses; however, they are beginning to show promising strength as their season progresses. The Spartans’ abilities were put on display when they earned their first win of the season Thursday night against the Davenport Central Blue Devils in dominating fashion with a final score of 43-7.
Now 1-3, the Spartan football players are looking forward to the game next week at home against Iowa City West, and plan to get another win.
The cross country teams have been successful this season as well, but they have experienced a few minor setbacks. Both girls and boys teams have had two meets canceled and are itching to get into the swing of racing.
Captain and senior runner Max Murphy knows how important each race is to his team. “The canceled meets have made us realize that we need to take advantage of the races that we do get to run.” Both boys and girls team traveled to Peoria last Saturday and placed six runners in the top 60 across all races.
The girls’ volleyball team has always been consistently successful and is showing true promise again this season. Currently ranked seventh in the state and holding a record of 14-3, the Spartans have been dominating their competition. They are looking forward to their next home meet on Monday, October 1st when they take on their biggest rivals, the Bettendorf Bulldogs.
The boys’ golf team is experiencing immense success this season as well. Sitting at a record of 68-1, the boys are ranked third in the state and are preparing intensely for their state meet. Top varsity golfer and junior Jack Dumas believes his team has what it takes to go far this season. “We have a new mentality this season that focuses on getting better as a team to reach our goal of winning state,” he said. Looking solid and gaining strength, the golfers are hoping to dominate the rest of their season and avenge their loss to Waukee at state in 2018.
Girls swimming has continued to build onto their strong legacy this season too. The Spartan swimmers even have a member who has qualified for the state meet, sophomore Taylor Buhr. Buhr is a consistent competitor for her team and represents them with pride. “My teammates and I have been working with a purpose this season and swimming smart.” The swimmers are growing stronger and smarter each day under their new coach, Robert Miecznikowski.
Overall, the fall sports season has gotten off to an exciting start for Spartan athletes and coaches, who are excited for what their teams have left to accomplish.
