The rise of Disney reality remakes

Many high schoolers at Pleasant Valley grew up with Disney films and fell in love with the stories that became permanent memories. Even today, hearing music from classics like Lion King and Tarzan brings back sweet memories from childhood. For frequent movie watchers, it has become easy to notice a trend in Disney movies: adapting their old, animated films into new, live-action films.

The trend started in 2010 with Disney’s remake of the 1951 animated movie, Alice in Wonderland. The remake was a huge success in the United States and worldwide, accumulating over a billion dollars in profit against its 200 million dollar budget. This tremendous profit by Disney helped the company to realize the untapped potential that remakes could hold.

The next movie that Disney produced was a remake of the 1959 Sleeping Beauty with a twist. It was titled Maleficent, and it boosted another 600 million dollars for Disney and confirmed the idea that they could make changes to the original tales and still get a positive reaction from the world. After Maleficent, Disney started to roll with their remakes.

The biggest and most memorable success Disney came by was in 2016, with the remake of the childhood favorite, Jungle Book. The action remake brought back sweet memories for all its viewers and astonished many with its impressive graphics. According to Variety Notes, it grossed up to 966 million dollars against its 175 million dollar budget, becoming only the 39th movie to ever break the 900 million dollar mark.

From the past three years of success, Disney has announced the upcoming remakes of many old movies. Zeke Sickels, senior, loves the new trend Disney has created, and he said, “I loved the Jungle Book! Plus, a remake of Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King will definitely be way better than the original just because of advances in computer editing.”

Many are excited for the new line of movies being made, including Landry Blunk, senior, who added, “The recent live-action remakes of all the previously animated Disney movies are really good with the graphics, and I can’t wait for there to be more.”

The list of future remakes includes Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, The Little Mermaid, Lion King, Snow White and the 7 Dwarfs, 101 Dalmatians, Aladdin, and many more.
