On the weekend of Mar. 21 and 22, a star Brazilian soccer player, Jorginho Frello, posted a now viral Instagram story exposing famous singer Chappell Roan for sending her security guards after his 11-year-old daughter. After the story blew up, Roan was subsequently banned from performing in Rio de Janeiro at the “Todo Mundo no Rio” festival.
Roan began her rise to fame in early 2024, with a key moment in her early rise to stardom being playing a record-setting set at Lollapalooza. Since then, she has become known for her distinctive behavior regarding the paparazzi and even her own fans.
In Aug. at the 2024 Outside Lands Festival in San Francisco, Roan yelled at her VIP section for not giving enough energy. Later that same year, in Sept. at the VMAs, Roan yelled at the paparazzi, telling them “no, you shut the F— up.” Situations like these, and a multitude of unsavory encounters with fans, have largely swayed public opinion of her and her actions.
The debate largely centers around the factuality of the information presented in the media. Sophomore Rayla Wheeler said, “I think that everyone is overreacting a lot about this situation, because Chappell Roan, the security guard, and the mother came out and said that that was actually not what happened, and the security guard said that he’s not at all associated with Chappell Roan in any way.” Despite the statements that appear to be true, many cite this as just another event to prove their thoughts on Roan’s behavior.
PV senior Olivia Sheehan believes in a more charitable interpretation of Roan’s blunt actions. “I don’t think the chapel should be canceled personally, because I think that she is just trying to change the norms of celebrities, and I think that needs to happen,” stated Sheehan.
While Chappell defenders are coming out of the woodwork following the initial round of cancellation, this new instance of Roan interacting with fans has largely been deemed as a stark departure from setting boundaries.
PV Senior Will Emerle is one of many people now looking at Roan’s actions through a more critical lens. “Everyone has a right to privacy. Chappell Roan has crossed the line from having clear boundaries to disrespecting her fans and being rude to the general public. This is especially evident in recent situations in which Chappell Roan causes people to harass her when, in reality, they are just reacting to being in the presence of the celebrity,” said Emerle.
On Mar. 9, Roan was entering a restaurant in Paris when she stopped and proceeded to record and confront paparazzi and fans exaggeratedly. Many social media users noted how odd the interaction felt, as if she was exaggerating the issue when there was an easy solution.
It is uncertain what will happen with Roan’s career next, as more people find things to critique about her after these recent events. She has explained the recent incident, but with no apology in sight.
