The latest season of the ‘One Piece’ live-action series (OPLA), a Netflix project adapting the original ongoing manga, has been met with positive reviews from critics and fans.
For casual viewers who don’t want to watch the over 1,000-episode-long anime, the live action is the more manageable yet still lovable show they didn’t know they needed.
‘One Piece’ follows the story of Luffy, a pirate who sets out to sea as a teenager to find the legendary treasure that shares the series’ name. Before the World Government executes him, pirate king Gol D. Roger tells all who will listen that he hid his treasure in the fictional seas of the Grand Line. Luffy follows his call, dreaming of becoming the king of the pirates just like Roger by finding his treasure.
Along the way, Luffy picks up a ragtag crew consisting of many beloved personalities: Zoro, a swordsman; Nami, a cartographer; Usopp, a sniper; and Sanji, a chef. Each character shares dreams tied to the mysteries of the Grand Line. Sanji, for example, wants to find the All Blue, an unknown part of the Grand Line with limitless ingredients for him to cook with.
Additionally, many characters in the show have magical powers granted by “devil fruits.” Luffy ate one called the “Gum-Gum Fruit,” which made his body unable to swim and able to stretch like rubber.
What has set the live-action adaptation apart from the anime is its approachability. OPLA understands what makes the source material so memorable—the characters and world building—and trims the slower, less engaging parts of the anime.
The anime is incredibly long, with notable pacing issues that sometimes result in episodes that do little to advance the plot or develop characters. The live action, by contrast, does a strong job of making each episode feel like a self-contained part of the story. On Netflix, episodes are usually around an hour, giving directors and writers more flexibility to develop and resolve plot points..
The live action is not necessarily shortening the overall story, though. The show is currently green lit for multiple seasons, and its strong start so far is promising.
For fans of the original series, such as PV senior Cate Bestold, the length is not a concern. “To me, ‘One Piece’ is all about the journey to (obviously) find the One Piece. But the One Piece itself isn’t the only important thing about the show. The adventures they go on in pursuit of it are just as, if not more so, important. Through them, the whole crew grows and changes together, into people who can achieve their dreams. It doesn’t just happen in an instant, achieving your big life dreams,” Bestold said.
Upon closer examination of the plot, ‘One Piece’ also offers the sense of hope the younger generation may be seeking.
PV senior and OPLA fan Whitney Cozad said the show has influenced her dream of becoming an English teacher and published author. “Even pursuing a passion in a field that is increasingly devalued, ‘One Piece’ has inspired me to continue to stand up for what I believe in and what I want to do. Just like Luffy, I want to have a positive mindset and be able to smile and push through even when things get difficult,” Cozad said.
Bestold has also found inspiration in the series. “I don’t wake up every morning and say that I am content with who I’ve become as a person,” she said. “But then again, Luffy doesn’t wake up every morning and say he is the Pirate King. He says I will become the Pirate King.”
Bestold continued, “‘One Piece’ has inspired me to stop criticizing myself for my shortcomings, but instead tell myself that I’m working on it. One day, I will be able to say that I achieved all my goals, I don’t have any regrets, and I’m content with my life. Until then, I’ll smile in the face of the things obstructing my goals, and live through the journey on the way to achieving my dreams.”
Looking at the main protagonist himself, Luffy never lets anyone get in the way of his dream. While it has taken him a 1,000-episode anime to pursue a single goal—and he is far from finished— the journey has never discouraged him.
Seeing a wide variety of characters chasing their dreams despite extreme fictional challenges is undeniably inspiring. While viewers may point to the series’ large production budget and strong performances, what truly stands out is the consistent sense of hope in each episode.
While life inspires art, art also inspires life. OPLA is shaping perspectives, one pirate adventure at a time.
