At 16-years-old, Sam Barber entered the country music scene with nothing but his grandparents’ guitar. Since then, he has accumulated a growing fanbase, and his recent album drop, Broken View, is just the latest hit to come out of the young star.
Barber’s initial rise to fame can be attributed to his 2023 song “Strait and Narrow.” The song gained traction on TikTok, bringing in thousands of new fans and fame overnight. Since that initial hit, he has released other titles, which have each gained fame online. Of his current discography, hits such as “Indigo” featuring Avery Anna and “Restless Mind” come to mind when his name is mentioned in country music circles.
Barber’s past songs are known to have darker themes and messaging than other country songs in the market. Key examples of this are “Man of the Year” and “S.O.B.” In “Man of the Year,” he expresses how he was never the man his girlfriend wanted him to be. It focuses on post-breakup independence and the journey he underwent to rediscover his personal sense of self.
“S.O.B.” is a seemingly upbeat song but what connects it with “Man of the Year” is the commentary “S.O.B” provides on an equally deeper idea: deep exhaustion as a result of self-destructive habits. “Broken View,” Barber’s new album, is a mix between electric guitar and folk music that continues his trend of exploring deeper concepts than expected for his genre.
A hit among the new album that exemplifies this is “Borrowed Time.” This song has a catchy melody that still follows the sad approach of his other songs. In the song, he talks about cutting ties with an old lover. One of the most notable lyrics in the song is, “Before you leave, take your Disease.” This lyric captures the story of the song by telling his old spouse to take the toxicity that she has carried into his life.
“The More I Hope,” another notable song on the album, fits right in with the recurring concept of intense longing for someone. A lyric which greatly demonstrates the inherent vulnerability of love is “The more I hope, the more I fold,” which portrays the process of being more vulnerable as one gains hope for love, and this distinct sense of vulnerability by Barber has resonated with many fans.
From the beginning, Barber has set himself apart from his country contemporaries by exploring inherently personal stories with darker themes and stories. His music is a refreshing new direction for the country genre, which has gained connotations of being male-dominated and surface level. “Broken View” is yet another successful display of Barber’s unique voice as a singer and creator, proving that exploring new ideas in such an established genre is a risk worth taking.
