“This show really takes on a darker tone than much of what Disney releases for Star Wars,” said PV junior Garrett Schutte. “It focuses on the underworld activities and the suffering of people. It really contrasts to other shows that Disney releases and is amazing for a more mature audience.”

Each episode builds and contributes directly to the overarching narrative, avoiding the slower, episodic structure that has affected other long-running animated series. The shorter season format helps maintain tension while allowing for meaningful character development.
Visually, the series builds on the animation style of previous Star Wars projects while incorporating more detailed environments and a color scheme that helps set the mood. These choices reflect the tone of the story, emphasizing the instability of the galaxy during the Empire’s rise.
“What stood out to me about the darker tone of the show was how it was still animated,” said PV junior Nathaniel Pielak. “Starwars has been able to create such an expansive universe through its dual use of live action and canon animation. Typically stars wars shows that are animated have an emphasis on Star Wars themes and backstory but miss the edginess and complexity the live action shows have. But with the use of animation as a medium for more dark themes and character edginess it expands the scope and impact of what Star Wars can do.”
Alongside this, the show stands out for its focus on internal conflict rather than large-scale battles. While action remains a key component, most of the tension comes from Maul’s strategic decisions and shifting alliances. This approach gives the series a more psychological edge compared to other Star Wars works.
For some viewers, this shift may be unexpected. Those looking for traditional hero-driven narratives may find the focus on a villain unfamiliar, but others may appreciate the deeper exploration of a character who has often existed on the outskirts of the main storyline.
“In the new show, Maul really takes on his role as an antihero,” Schutte said. “From other Star Wars shows and movies, we have seen Maul with an important role, but never as a main character. In the new show, his moral ambiguity is really highlighted, giving a show of two sides of the character, the evil side and the morally right side.”
Despite its darker themes, “Shadow Lord” maintains the world-building and interconnected storyline that defines the Star Wars universe. References to larger events and subtle details help ground the series within the broader timeline without overwhelming the narrative.
Ultimately, “Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord” offers a fresh perspective on the franchise by focusing on one of its more enigmatic characters.
