Make way for makeup

Make+way+for+makeup

Makeup is a growing industry that brings in over 445 billion in revenue worldwide. Makeup allows women to enhance their own natural beauty, giving women a chance to feel more confident in their own skin. These products are more than just foundation, concealer, lipstick, mascara, etc. These tools have the power to build self esteem and allow women an alternative route to truly express themselves.

Makeup is not always appreciated for what it is. Those who have a passion for makeup can be seen as “self-obsessed” or “trying to change who they really are” but with makeup comes creativity, passion, and artistic abilities. Makeup is an art in every form and here is why.

Makeup consists of line work which can be explained through contouring, the method of creating lines using dark colors and blending. One must also take the color wheel into consideration. This means recognizing a person’s skin color and undertones. Some people have pink undertones while others might have a more yellowish tint to their skin. It all depends on the person but no matter the skin type, there will always be the perfect color. Makeup artists have the ability to try new things and constantly experiment around with different ideas. Over the years, makeup has seen significant changes.

Olivia Peters has always been intrigued by makeup. In middle school, she started watching tutorials on Youtube and following along with them as they played. Once she understood the basics, she continued to try to develop new skills and ideas to create more imaginative looks. Peters said, “Makeup is important to women because it can be used as a vehicle for both expression and empowerment. It is also worth noting that makeup is an art for everyone, regardless of their gender identity!”

Adrienne Necker got into makeup also through Youtube. She watched her first makeup tutorial in the 6th grade and has been watching them religiously ever since. Necker said some of her favorite current products in the industry include the, “Tarte liquid lipstick in Rose, L’Oreal Lash Paradise, Anastasia Dip Brow Pomade, and the Anastasia Modern Renaissance Palette.” Necker loves creating different looks.

Paisley Vanzuiden said, “I enjoy makeup because there’s no limitations of it. There’s so much creativity put into the whole aspect of makeup. It makes people feel beautiful and powerful. I love helping people feel good about themselves even if it is just for a moment. I hope people realize that makeup is much more than just some stuff you put on your face.” Makeup has the ability to not only change the way a person looks but also the way he or she feels.

Jorie Claeys, an employee at Sephora, said, “Makeup is very important to women because it empowers women. It gives them the confidence they don’t think they have. It allows their inner beauty to shine on the outside.” Sephora is a worldwide cosmetics store that offers over 300 brands including their very own. Claeys was able to provide an insight to current trends in the cosmetic world. She said, “Ombre lips seems to be huge. This is when a person uses a darker lipstick around the outside with a lighter color on the inside. Winged eyeliner and highlighter is also big right now.”

While makeup trends continue to change, the passion and originality behind the looks will not. Makeup is an expressive art that allows the creative juices to flow and enables women to be whoever they desire to be.
