With Halloween just around the corner, many people enjoy watching scary movies. Whether watching at home or at a friend’s house, here are the top five scariest movies to watch this Halloween season. Keep in mind that R rated movies are only for those above 18.

1. “The Conjuring”

“The Conjuring” is a movie set in Rhode Island, and it follows “demonologists” Lorraine and Ed Warren. They are summoned to the home of Carolyn and Roger Perron, where a supernatural presence has made itself known and is terrorizing the family. Soon the events escalate in a horrifying manner. This movie will have you at the edge of your seat the whole night. It is rated R and is available on Hulu and HBO Max for free.

2. “Us”

“Us” follows a protagonist named Adelaide Wilson who returns back to her childhood home with her family. However, many years ago, she suffered a traumatic experience in this home and knows something bad will happen if they keep living there. Thinking nothing of it, she stays in despair. One night, four masked strangers arrive at the driveway of the house, silently standing and doing nothing. Upon closer inspection, the family realizes  the four strangers are a doppelganger family of themselves. “Us” is rated R and is available on Netflix, Peacock, and Hulu for free.

3. “Sixth Sense”

For more of a psychological thriller, the 1999 movie “Sixth Sense” is a great option. This movie follows a young boy, Cole, who has a peculiar condition: he is able to see those who have passed away. A psychologist named Malcolm Crowe agrees to treat Cole and figure out what is causing these problems. In exchange, Cole offers his help for Malcolm to reconcile with his abstrused wife. Make sure to watch the twist at the end. “Sixth Sense” is rated PG-13 and must be purchased.

4. “Monster House”

For a family friendly Comedy-Horror, the animated movie “Monster House” is great. The movie follows three kids, DJ, Jenny, and Chowder, who discover that their neighbor’s house is its own living entity. As they investigate further, they learn of the dark history surrounding the house and its owner, an old man named Nebbercracker. With the help of a mystic individual, they embark on a journey to free the souls trapped inside the house. “Monster House” is rated PG and is available on Hulu.

5. “Insidious” (2010)

“Insidious” is a horror movie about a family, the Lamberts, who move into a new house and soon begin experiencing supernatural occurrences. Their son Dalton falls into a coma caused by a wanton spirit, and the family contacts a paranormal investigator in hopes of finding a solution to stopping this occurrence. They uncover that Dalton’s soul is possessed by a spirit while he is in a realm known as “the further.” “Insidious” is rated PG-13 and is available on HBO Max.
