On Tuesday, April 4, a chemical weapons attack was launched on civilians by the Syrian government. It is estimated that some 80 civilians have been killed by what is believed to be a nerve gas attack. The United States responded last night by launching 59 tomahawk missiles at the military airfield base that is responsible for the attack. The Pentagon stated, “…the attack was aimed only at the military base, and no civilians were harmed.”
The overnight attacks have brewed up a lot of attention in the early morning of Friday, April 7. Many governments, including the U.K., France, Germany, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Australia, and Japan, all say they fully support President Trump’s decision. However, both Iran and Russian governments are in an outrage.
A spokesperson from Iran’s Foreign Ministry stated, “Iran strongly condemns any such unilateral attacks…the measures will only strengthen the terrorist in Syria.” Also during the morning of Friday, April 7, Iranians were shouting anti-US slogans during a prayer ceremony.
Russia is extremely furious with Trump. “He dealt a serious blow to Russian-U.S. relations, which are already in a poor state,” said Dmitry Peskov, Spokesman for Russian President, Vladimir Putin. Peskov believes that the attack is almost identical to the situation which happened in 2003 when U.S. and U.K. invaded Iraq without the UN Security Council’s approval. Peskov described the attacks as “an act of aggression against a sovereign state delivered in violation of international law under a far-fetched pretext.”
The upcoming weeks will be full foreign and domestic shifts. The Trump administration is looking to put a stop to the barbaric tactics of Syrian president, Bashar Assad.
