This is spARTa! Q&A with Roshni Nair

This+is+spARTa%21+Q%26A+with+Roshni+Nair

Senior vocalist Roshni Nair continues to wow audiences with her talents in her last year of performing at Pleasant Valley. In addition to partaking in Pleasant Valley’s top vocal choir for the maximum three years, Nair has compiled an impressive list of musical achievements as a spartan. Through participation in both small and large group events, Nair has been honored with multiple division one ratings at state festivals and has recorded multiple all state honors. During her time at the highschool, Nair has also been recognized with perhaps the highest state honor, partaking in the Iowa All State Jazz Choir this past summer. While her love for singing began early with the practice of classical Indian vocalization, Nair has expanded her range and talents in singing, hoping to share her passion with others.

When did you start singing?

I began singing when I was 2 and started taking vocal lessons when I was 7.

When did you realize your talent in singing?

I always enjoyed singing as a kid, and my family suggested that I should start taking vocal lessons. In elementary school, I began auditioning for honor choirs and participating in different local programs.

Who do you feel has inspired and/or bettered you as a vocalist?

I have been learning Hindustani classical music with my teacher, Rinku Bhattacharya, for ten years. I became involved in choir at Pleasant Valley in sixth grade. Since then, I have improved so much as a singer with the help of all of my choir directors. We have the best choir department, hands down.

Is there a specific type of music or genre you prefer to sing?

I grew up listening to a lot of old Bollywood music, so I enjoy singing some of that. I also dabble in vocal jazz.

What vocal accomplishment are you most proud of?

Last year I was selected for the All State Jazz Ensemble, which is definitely my biggest vocal accomplishment to date.

Do you have any plans to continue this activity next year in college?

I hope to participate in choir next year at the University of Iowa.
