This is spARTa! Q&A with Ethan Good

Ethan Good, senior, participates in band both inside and outside of school. He dedicates his time to improving his skills and helping others improve theirs. He can play three instruments and is in the process of learning two more. Good also plays in bands  that performs gigs around the Quad Cities.

What instruments do you mainly play and how long have you been playing?

“I started playing the piano at age 5 and have played the trumpet for 6 years.”

How long have you been at band?

“I’ve been in band since 6th grade.”

What inspired you to start playing and why do you continue?

“My older brother asked for piano lessons when I was 5, and of course, I wanted to do them too because he was my older brother. I continued because music has given me an opportunity to meet some great people, and getting better at something you love is one of the most rewarding things anybody could do.”

Did you always know you wanted to play the trumpet?

“Going into 6th grade, I was actually planning on playing french horn until literally up to the moment when we chose instruments. Then I chose trumpet.”

Why do you enjoy playing?

“I enjoy playing because music fascinates me and I really love the feeling of getting better. It’s one of my true passions and I’m just very grateful that I’ve gotten to do what I’ve done at 17.”

Where do you play other than the school band?

“I play piano on Sundays at my church and in bands that play gigs. My bands are named Hal Reed and Mississippi Journey, The Winter Blues All Stars, Down the Drain, and Serious Business.”

When did you join your band and why did you want to join a band?

“I joined a band in jr high to try to gain the experience of playing with others, and as an opportunity to make a little extra money. Also, it’s fun!”

Does playing help you earn money?

“I get paid for playing in church and at gigs.”

Do you play any other instruments for fun?

“I play bass and am trying to learn guitar and accordion.”

What accomplishment/moments are you most proud of from your music career?

“I’ve played main stage at some pretty large festivals and have even gone as far as Tennessee and Mississippi to play with some of the best kids in the country. I’ve participated in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis and played with/watched some amazing people. I’ve made all-state for the trumpet two years in a row, and I’m hoping to make that three years.”

What are your plans beyond high school?

“I’m planning on going to the University of Iowa to become an engineer, but I’d like to possibly double major or minor in music, particularly jazz studies.”
