This is spARTa! Q&A with Ellie Lindmark

This+is+spARTa%21+Q%26A+with+Ellie+Lindmark

Senior Ellie Lindmark participates in choir both inside and outside of school. She dedicates everyday to improving her voice and hopes to one day study music performance and use her talents to help others. You may have seen her sing the national anthem at home volleyball and basketball games.

How long have you been singing?

I’ve been singing since I was seven years old. I started in my church choir.

When did you find your passion for singing?

I’ve always liked singing, but once I got to high school is when my life started to revolve around it.

How often do you practice your singing?

I practice everyday and have a voice lesson once a week.

Do you sing outside of school?

I sing the national anthem at all the home volleyball games and basketball games, and sometimes soccer games. I also sing for my church in the choir on sundays, and on Wednesday nights for Confirmation worship.

What have you accomplished in your singing career?

I’ve sung in the All-State Chorus for three years. I participate in competitions every year. I had one called NATS [National Association of Teachers of Singing] a couple weeks ago, and I got 1st in the classical women’s category and honorable mention in the musical theatre women’s category. I also sing at state Solo and Ensemble festival every year.

Who inspires you to continue singing?

My parents and my grandma inspire me to keep singing. My entire family sings — my grandma is a retired music teacher and is my biggest fan. Both of my parents made all-state multiple years, so I get my voice from them.

What words do you have for aspiring artists?

For aspiring artists, I would say make sure you’re having fun. Singing is supposed to be a stress reliever and not a stressor, so the songs you sing should challenge you and make you a better singer but they shouldn’t be crazy hard. Find a good teacher you connect with.

Who has helped you grow the most as a singer?

My voice teacher, Catherine Lyon, has helped me grow the most. She took me under her wing and helped my voice grow and helped me grow as a person. She always makes sure I’m having fun and has always been a person I can talk to about anything, not just singing.

What are your plans after high school?

My plans after high school are to major in vocal performance at a undecided school. After that, the plan is to go to grad school on the East Coast and live in NYC.
